A jury on June 19 found a Pasadena man guilty of murdering the mother of his two children, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. The woman's body was discovered in 2015 inside her vehicle in Monrovia,

The jury deliberated about eight hours before finding Jose Roberto Turner, 49, guilty of first-degree murder for killing 31-year-old LaJoya Kamiel McCoy, with an allegation that he used a rope as a deadly weapon.

Family members reported McCoy missing June 15, 2015, after she did not show up for some appointments, according to law enforcement officials. She had last been seen the week before.

The day she was reported missing, police went to her apartment, where they found evidence of foul play. The next day, McCoy was found inside her vehicle, prosecutors said.

According to evidence presented at trial, Turner strangled and stabbed McCoy on June 10, 2105. He had previously threatened McCoy’s life after their relationship ended, prosecutors said.

Jonathan “Johnny” Salas, a 17-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, June 23, at East 92nd Street and South Hooper Avenue in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Investigators think the teen, known as “Chino” to family and friends, was riding his bicycle home around 11 a.m. when he was struck by a stray bullet, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Guillermo Morales said.

Shortly before the shooting, two vehicles collided at the intersection, and the occupants had exited and begun fighting, Morales said, adding that their cars were blocking traffic.

Someone in a third vehicle, described as white by police, began shooting at the people who were fighting and struck the boy instead, Morales said. Investigators say Johnny was not involved in gangs and don’t think he was the intended target.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:26 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Family members told ABC 7 News that Johnny had been riding his bike home from the dentist's office the morning he was shot.

Morales said the boy had just completed his junior year at Diego Rivera Learning Complex in Florence-Firestone and had aspirations of becoming a police officer.

“His family described him as a very good kid,” Morales said. “He appeared to be just an innocent bystander who got shot.”

The family has started a fundraising account for funeral expenses.

Investigators detained three people involved in the fight, but released them after questioning, Morales said. Investigators are hoping security cameras in the area will give them a description of the shooter. The white car was last seen driving east on East 92nd Street.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

A Glendale man was sentenced June 23 to 41 years to life in prison for killing his grandparents at the home they shared, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Nathaniel Wayne Scheiern, 36, pleaded no contest on April 27 to first- and second-degree murder in the deaths of Verna Irene Scheiern and William Karl Scheiern.

Sometime between June 24 and June 25, 2015, Scheiern attacked and killed his 82-year-old grandmother with an ax, according to court testimony. He then killed his 77-year-old grandfather with a hammer after the man tried to intervene, prosecutors said.

The bodies of the couple were discovered by police June 28, 2015, after a family member said they couldn't be reached and called authorities.

A man was sentenced June 16 to 50 years to life in state prison for the 2015 murder of a husband picking up his wife at a South Los Angeles home, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Eduardo Moreno Garcia, 27, was found guilty April 5 of murder in the 2015 killing of 26-year-old Armando Ortega.

Another defendant, Ivan Omar Moreno, pleaded no contest on Feb. 27 to one count of voluntary manslaughter and was immediately sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

On Aug. 25, 2015, Ortega was arriving in his vehicle to pick up his wife near 45th Street and Hooper Avenue when Garcia and Moreno drove up in a van, according to prosecutors.

The van stopped and Garcia stepped out with a handgun and shot into the back window of Ortega’s car, striking him in the back of the head and killing him almost instantly, prosecutors said.

Authorities announced a $50,000 reward Thursday in the killing of a 20-year-old college student who was shot near a South Los Angeles park last year.

About 10:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 2016, Mariana Resendiz was in the area of South Avalon Boulevard and East 41st Street in Historic South-Central when a person walked up and shot her, Lt. Raul Jovel with the LAPD’s Newton Division said at a news conference.

“We’re offering a reward in this case, but more importantly asking for justice and compassion for Mariana and her family,” Jovel said.

Resendiz grew up and lived in the area, and police said she frequented Gilbert Lindsay Park. Investigators say they hope anyone who was with her in the days before the shooting will contact them.

Police released few additional details about the shooting, including any description of a suspect. Police also declined to comment on whether anyone witnessed the killing.

Resendiz was a student at East Los Angeles College who wanted to become a probation officer.

Her sister, who declined to give her name for fear of retaliation, said that she has experienced a “roller coaster” of emotions since Resendiz was killed.

“She was a good girl,” the sister said.

Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD Newton Division detectives at (323) 846-6556. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

'He wanted to get the bad people out of here.' Family and friends mourn victim of Florence-Firestone shooting

Jonathan “Johnny” Salas looked older than 17 and always acted older too, say his family and friends.

He had a thing about assisting others, said his mother, Delia Salas. That’s why he wanted to be a police officer, she said. That’s why he made tortas to sell at school and hunted odd jobs so he could help his parents cover expenses for their family of eight.

Seven now.

Johnny was a responsible teenager, Delia Salas said, who would play games with his younger siblings, walk them to school and keep the house tidy while his parents each worked two jobs.

“At Christmas, he’d tell mom, ‘Don’t buy a Christmas present for me. Spend the money on the rent or a new house,” said his brother Jared, 9.

His compunction to help is why Johnny was riding his bike home from the dentist the morning of June 23, when he was caught in the crossfire of someone else’s argument. He was struck by gunfire at South Hooper Avenue and East 92nd Street, just four blocks from his home.

His mother and father, Erubiel Salas, had left early for their jobs that morning. His older brother, Juan Cedano, said he was supposed to pick Johnny up and take him to his appointment, but the traffic was bad.

“I came late,” he whispered.

Johnny Salas

So Johnny, who loved working out and riding his bike, did the helpful thing. He bicycled to the dentist. They called later, when he never came home, and learned he’d been there, and left around 11 a.m.

He’d had a big evening planned that Friday night. His father had given him permission to go on a first date with his girlfriend. He had a new shirt for the occasion in his backpack, and a stuffed bear he’d bought as a gift.

But he wasn’t carrying ID, so it wasn’t until that evening, when his family reported him missing, that investigators figured out who he was. His family was notified on their porch about 1 a.m. and they never went to bed that night, Cedano said. “We watched the sun come up right here,” he said, in the shade of their stuccoed porch, where parakeets sing to passersby.

Their house is surrounded by a handsome wrought iron fence. The other houses in the neighborhood are small but tidy. Johnny was killed at a busy intersection with churches on two of the corners.

But Erubiel Salas says he knew the neighborhood wasn’t safe. That’s why he didn’t want Johnny to go out at night. “We should have moved out of this bad neighborhood,” he said, trying to control his sobs. “We should have moved to a better place.”

Investigators don’t have much to go on about the man who shot Johnny. Two cars had collided in the intersection, blocking traffic, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Guillermo Morales. The occupants got out and began to fight, and a white car drove up and someone inside began shooting.

The gunman missed his apparent targets, the people who were fighting, but one of his bullets struck Johnny. Other drivers noticed that Johnny had been hit and called 911, Morales said. The white car drove away eastbound on East 92nd Street.

The Salas family knew about the trouble at the intersection that night. They just didn't know that Johnny was somehow involved. He wasn’t one to get in trouble, Cedano said.

School was important to Johnny, who’d just finished his junior year at the Diego Rivera Learning Center. He wanted to graduate with a strong GPA, so he’d enrolled in summer school to improve some grades that slipped during his freshman year, said his friend Eduardo Jimenez. He was due to start on Monday.

Instead, on the day after summer classes began, Eduardo and other friends stood on the corner where Johnny died, collecting donations for the Salas family. A shrine of candles and flowers surrounded Johnny’s communion photo and tokens of the things he loved — a slice of pepperoni pizza, a candy bar, open bottles of soda and water, and a picture from his favorite show, "Dragon Ball Z."

“He never liked bad influences or hanging out with people who were gang related,” Eduardo said. “He never liked to drink or smoke. He just liked hanging out with his friends and helping people out. That was his thing. He always put other people above him.”

Johnny wanted to be a police officer so he could improve the Florence-Firestone neighborhood, Eduardo said.

“Everybody’s not bad here,” he said. “There are working people, doing what they need to do for their families. But there are some bad people too. Johnny wanted to get them out of here, so people could live their lives and move freely down the street without having to watch their back.”

Johnny’s friends had crowded into the house the day after he died.

“We didn’t know he had so many friends,” Erubiel Salas said. He smiled at that memory, and then his anger flared at the people who chose to fight in the street after an accident instead of working it out. He’s angry too at the man who pulled the trigger and wants him brought to justice.

But what he wants most, he says, is for parents to appreciate their children. “Don’t let an opportunity pass to spend time with them and say how much you love them,” he said. “You have them right now. You never know what will happen tomorrow.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Three people were charged June 28 with murder in connection with the shooting death last May of a Long Beach man, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Devin Marcus Wright, 22; Roosevelt Citizen, 23; and Ellese Paschal, 25, were charged in the fatal shooting of Victor Eugene Alford, 37. Each also was charged with one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling. Wright faces additional gun and gang special allegations.

On May 15, 2016, Long Beach police were called about 5:40 p.m. to a shooting near East 61st Street and Orange Avenue. They found Alford lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a police spokesman. Family members said he was going to pick up his mother from church when he was shot.

Alford was taken to a hospital, where he died 10 days later, according to coroner’s records.

Detectives later identified a red Mercedes-Benz and a gray Volvo SUV with Nevada license plates that were seen leaving the area after the shooting, a police spokesman said.

Officers also obtained composite drawings of two persons of interest, including a woman with red hair who matched Paschal’s description.

Paschal was arrested June 26, 2017, in Victorville. Wright and Citizen already were in custody on unrelated charges, police said.

All three are scheduled to return to court July 18 for an arraignment hearing.
