Two gang members sentenced for killing 19-year-old Marine in Jefferson Park
Two gang members were sentenced this week for the 2016 murder of a 19-year-old Marine on leave from Camp Pendleton who was visiting family and friends in Jefferson Park, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Oscar Aguilar, 28, was sentenced to 100 years to life in state prison for shooting Carlos Segovia-Lopez in the head while he was sitting in his car in South Los Angeles, prosecutors said. Esau Rios, 31, who told Aguilar to shoot Segovia-Lopez, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison.
In June, Aguilar and Rios were each found guilty of murder and shooting at an occupied motor vehicle. A jury also found Aguilar guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm and determined that the shooting was committed for the benefit of a street gang.
On Sept. 16, 2016, Segovia-Lopez had just left his girlfriend’s house in the 2100 block of West 31st Street when he saw Aguilar and Rios trying to break into a nearby vehicle and confronted the men, police have said.
Rios directed Aguilar to approach Segovia-Lopez in his car, and Aguilar opened fire.
Segovia-Lopez died three days later.
A third person pleaded no contest to one count of accessory after the fact in June 2018.

Man sentenced to 122 years to life for killing 38-year-old man in front of a boy in Long Beach
A 35-year-old man was sentenced last week to 122 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a man in front of a 6-year-old boy in Long Beach in 2017, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
A jury found Jason Monroe Daniels guilty July 9 of second-degree murder, child abuse that could cause great bodily injury and possession of a firearm by a felon, prosecutors said.
A jury also found true other gun allegations.
On April 19, 2017, Daniels visited an ex-girlfriend’s family home in Long Beach and became angry when he saw William Luther Hayes, 38, spending time with his ex’s 6-year-old son, according to prosecutors.
Daniels walked up to Hayes, shot him in front of the boy, then fled to Las Vegas. He was arrested by authorities two weeks later.
