Jose Torres, a 17-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, Oct. 13, near North Avalon Boulevard and East Q Street in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Torres was shot in the head once at 9:22 a.m. as he stood on the sidewalk, police officials said.
Authorities are looking for a black truck, possibly a Honda. The killing may be gang-related, but investigators do not believe it was a drive-by shooting, said Lt. James Alvarez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division.
“The vehicle was parked,” Alvarez said.
Nearby Phineas Banning Senior High School was on lockdown for 1-1/2 hours after the shooting, but the order was lifted about 11:30 a.m., a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District said in a statement.
Police said there was no indication the gunman fled into the school or drove toward campus.
Anyone with information about the death of Jose Torres can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS [800-222-8477].
